According to new research from Liberty Insurance, one in six people didn’t lock their front 
door the last time they left their home.
The car is packed and you’re ready to go. While driving along the road, with your favourite radio tunes, you really begin to feel you’re on holidays. But it is when you are already half way to your destination, a thought suddenly occurs to you, and you think to yourself “Did I remember to lock the door and turn on the alarm?”
But a new study carried out by Millward Brown on behalf of Liberty Insurance shows that a lot of people in Ireland have a lax attitude to home security in general, with many of us not locking our doors, closing windows or setting the alarm.
According to their survey, one in six Irish people didn’t lock their door the last time they left their home. This statistic spikes to one in three among 17 to 24 year old’s, who according to the research are guilty of being the least security conscious of all. Surprisingly, Dubliners were the most likely to leave their front door unlocked nationwide, at 19%.
The Liberty Insurance research reveals that only 35% put on an alarm when they leave their home. It was also discovered that almost 24% of home insurance claims in July 2013 were for home thefts, highlighting the need for increased vigilance over the summer months.
To combat this, Liberty Insurance has launched a new campaign to encourage people to take home security more seriously. Their new home safety campaign will ask people to – Check, Lock and Leave, particularly in the summer months when break-ins tend to increase.
It’s important that the older family members help the younger people at home to recognise the need to lock up before they leave. Liberty Insurance claims figures highlight the month of July particularly as a key period for extra vigilance so they want to reveal their findings and encourage people to review their habits to keep their homes safer”
